FAQ

What is a dental implant exactly?

Dental Implants are titanium screws that are placed into the jaw bone. The bone then develops with the titanium screw in place, to form a near perfect and unbreakable union. A porcelain tooth is then attached to the implant. The end result is a beautiful tooth that looks and feels like a real tooth, yet doesn’t decay.

Dental implants can be used to replace one tooth or an entire arch of teeth. An entire arch of teeth is often referred to as an All-On-4 treatment.

A wonderful facet of dental implants lies within having an entirely new structure in your mouth. You are no longer relying on old work or teeth with poor foundations. This allows dental implants to have a long-term success rate greater than 95%.

All-On-4 describes a full set of upper or lower teeth, placed on four supporting dental implants. They can be described as fixed bridges which do not move. The entire treatment can incredibly be completed in just one day. The best longevity and results of any full arch implant treatment, lies within the all-on-4 treatment.

If you suffer from loose, crumbly, failing teeth or ill-fitting dentures, then All-On-4 is a viable option. Best of all, the treatment restores confidence and healthy function to almost anybody.

On occasion, in order to place an implant in the upper jaw, we may need to generate bone using the air filled spaces known as the sinus. This involves raising the floor of the sinus to create more bone support for the implant. Often this can be done at the same time the implant is placed otherwise there is a four-six month waiting period.

Finance options are available, see below for more details.

For the best possible outcome, an implant needs contact with as much of the bone as possible. This is so the two can fuse together strongly. If you have been missing a tooth for a very long time, you may not have enough bone and therefore grafting will be required.

Grafting refers to the placement of additional bone to the area, in order to allow the implant to be entirely covered by bone. Grafting can be completed with your own bone (autogenic), or a fake mineral bone (allogenic). Your own bone is then stimulated and eventually grows through the bone graft to replace it. This procedure is usually done at the time your implant is placed, but in severe cases, it may be required 6 months prior to treatment.

We offer a range of sedation options to cater for nervous and anxious patients, which may otherwise dread undergoing wisdom teeth removal.

  • Intravenous or twilight sedation

Twilight sedation is a safe and reliable method providing patients with a relaxing and comfortable feeling at any dental appointment. Our anaesthetists administer chair-side sedation making long appointments feel to be over in just a few minutes.

  • Happy gas

Happy gas is mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. It is an excellent gas for dental procedures, promoting relaxation and allows our patients to be much more comfortable for dental procedures.

Happy gas is also very short acting. Once the gas has stopped being administered its effects wear off very quickly.

  • Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking one or two tablets of valium or a valium-class drug 30 minutes before your appointment. This allows our patients to be much more relaxed and at ease about dental treatment. You can request oral sedation for any of your appointments, provided you do not have any medical condition that would deem you unsuitable.

  • Penthrox sedation

Penthrox is also known as the green whistle. It is similar to happy gas but is handheld and allows the patient to control how much they want to inhale. It works great for dental appointments as it can be inhaled before the procedure and during for pain relief and relaxation. It is extremely safe and is suitable for almost all our patients.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
