Grinding or clenching

Tooth grinding or bruxismI is a common condition. A lot of people experience grinding or clenching at some point especially during times of stress, however it can often be a chronic habit that causes damage to teeth and fillings, cause jaw pain or be a sign of underlying issues with the jaw joint and muscles .

Grinding your teeth can occur during the day however often the habit occurs during sleep while you unable to control it.

Signs that you may grind your teeth include:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth and fillings
  • Sore or tense jaw
  • Your partner complains about loud grinding during the night
  • A click in the jaw

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is important to make an appointment with the dentist for assessment as it may cause serious damage to your teeth and jaw. Treatment may be as simple as a small night guard worn each night that protects your teeth and allows your jaw to rest in a position that gives the tense and strained muscles a break or may require more extensive treatment such as fillings, crowns (CEREC) or root canal treatment.
