A rubber dam is a sheet of rubber which is stretched over the teeth with holes to punch to isolate particular teeth to be worked on. Rubber dam acts as a shield to prevent amalgam particles and water spray containing dissolved amalgam contacting your mouth tissues, therefore preventing ingestion of the particles.
