Gum disease isnt pretty...

...but you should know about it.No point putting your head in the sand.  Gum disease is a fact of life. But these days, we know more and have more solutions to the problems.

Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums around the teeth. It can affect anyone, anytime – you'll just notice your gums are sore and bleed easily – and that's a perfect scenario for bad breath as well.  While gingivitis is relatively common, Periodontal Disease is worse. It's the inflammation and destruction of the supporting tissue around your teeth. That means your gums, collagen ligaments and even the bone. It can cause teeth to become loose and even fall out.

Periodontal Disease has 3 main risk factors: a build-up of plaque and tartar, smoking and a family history of diabetes. It usually affects those over 30 years of age and rarely shows up until a lot of damage is done.

Treatment and Prevention

Treatments for periodontal disease can include surgery, deep intensive cleansing and more recently, laser therapy for roots and gums has been found extremely effective.

But prevention is far better than cure. Take simple steps such as regular flossing, brushing and rinsing with a mouthwash that prevents plaque acid and tartar build-up. Avoid smoking.
