This is an indirect restoration that's manufactured at a laboratory and bonded onto the original tooth. It covers the entire tooth and is usually made from porcelain ceramic or ceramic with gold underneath. They're rarely made purely from gold! Crowns have a life span of 30 years or more.
Why do I need a crown
If there's not enough tooth left to support a filling, then a crown is the best solution. It will help prevent the tooth from breaking or splitting and it will help prevent an existing crack from spreading. Crowns are often required after Root Canal Therapy.
Your very own Crown Affair
First, an impression of the tooth or teeth requiring crowns is sent to a dental ceramist. You choose the colour to match your own teeth and then your dentist will provide you with a 'stand in' crown until yours is ready (2 – 3 weeks). At that stage, it's cemented in place and your mouth is happy again!
